B’klyn station-rehab reopening simply ‘M’arvelous

Brooklyn’s Central Avenue subway station reopened yesterday after being closed for an $11 million, five-month makeover.

The station closed in March, forcing M-line riders in Bushwick to trudge along Myrtle Avenue to the Knickerbocker Avenue station, about a half-mile away.

The MTA upgrades included completely replacing the street and platform stairs, installing a new drainage system, and refurbishing the agent booth.

It follows work done earlier this year to renovate the Knickerbocker Avenue stop.

Ridgewood residents will soon benefit from work being done to improve the Seneca Avenue, Forest Avenue and Fresh Pond stations along the M. The improvements are all part of a $47 million project funded by the Federal Transit Administration.

Businesses near the Central Avenue stop are likely to benefit from the return of the station’s 3,500 daily passengers.

The MTA also announced plans last month to run trains along the M line to Essex-Delancey in Manhattan on weekends in mid-2014.
