Why Darryl Strawberry doesn’t follow baseball anymore

Forget Darryl Strawberry’s home runs and World Series rings. He insists he already has.

“I don’t follow baseball [any] more,” the former Mets and Yankees outfielder said Tuesday.

Instead, he’s focused on his ministry and the rehab centers he’s opening around the country.

“I haven’t been around baseball in years,” said Strawberry, who was at the Sheraton in Midtown Tuesday, surrounded by people talking about the Super Bowl. “That’s not what I do anymore.”

Strawberry and his wife have built a church in St. Louis and he travels around the country, talking to people.

“My whole life is different,” said Strawberry, 51. “It’s a joy. I have purpose. I’m doing what I was created to do, not play baseball. Baseball was part of what I did, but I’m really doing what I was created to do now. I’m grateful for the fact I have the chance to help people.”

He has so removed himself from the game that made him famous, he refused to comment on Alex Rodriguez’s suspension.

“I’m not going to talk about that,” Strawberry said. “That has nothing to do with me.”
