COACHES ON IMPORTANT MISSION

It’s been a busy spring for Manhattan College coach Barry Rohrssen.

After deflecting rumors that he was headed to Lexington, Ky., to join friend and new Kentucky coach John Calipari as an assistant, Rohrssen went about the business of securing next season’s roster.

With that done, he will now drop the slick suit for some fatigues once again. Rohrssen — along with DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright, American coach Jeff Jones, and former Virginia coach and Post March Mardness columnist Pete Gillen — will head overseas next month for the second time in as many years to partake in “Operation Hoop Talk,” a goodwill tour sponsored by United States Organizations and Armed Forces Entertainment.

Last year, Rohrssen was a part of “Operation Hardwood,” a similar mission created to boost morale and bring a touch of home to those in uniform. In last year’s mission, he toured the Persian Gulf region. This year’s mission will take him back to the Persian Gulf region, but also Afghanistan. He will leave June 8 and return June 16.

“It’s an honor to be selected and be a part of this special journey,” Rohrssen said. “It will be my second tour, and having already witnessed the bravery and heroism of our courageous soldiers firsthand, I’m even more excited about this upcoming mission.”

On Tuesday, it was officially announced that the Jaspers had signed recruits Rico Pickett, George Beamon and one-handed Kevin Laue.
