BOOSTS IN MATH ARE ADDING UP

City kids’ math scores are up again this year — with many schools delivering double-digit increases in the number of students passing state exams, education insiders told The Post.

While the results of this year’s state math exams in third through eighth grades won’t officially be made public until 11 a.m. today, several sources said the scores were up considerably compared with last year in the city and statewide.

Many elementary and middle schools registered dramatic gains of 15 percentage points or more, sources said.

“Thank God. Math scores are up across the board,” one education official said.

Coming on the heels of a dramatic 11.2 percent jump in the city’s reading scores last month, gains in math could give Mayor Bloomberg a big boost as the debate over whether he should retain control of the school system heats up.

State lawmakers have until June 30 to renew, revise or repeal the 2002 legislation that put the reins of the school system in the mayor’s hands.

Bloomberg suggested he was anticipating good news .

“If we can do well in the English language-arts tests, we should do very well on the math tests,” he said last week.

Meanwhile, advocates on opposite sides of the debate over mayoral control held competing rallies yesterday.

A two-day, five-borough bus tour kicked off to advocate for mayoral control.

Over at City Hall, a group of students, parents and politicians called for changes, including greater parental involvement and transparency.
