HOOPS: ‘Cuse reinstates guard

Syracuse guard Eric Devendorf could be back on the court Tuesday after completing 40 hours of community service.

The university issued a statement announcing Devendorf’s return to the team. He was back practicing on Friday and yesterday and could return to the court for Tuesday’s Big East opener against Seton Hall

NFL: Ravens’ Mason to play

Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason, who is suffering from a shoulder injury, will play today against Jacksonville, coach John Harbaugh told ESPN.

* Police are searching for former Patriots player and high school football coach Danny Villa, who is accused of raping a child.

The Wrentham District Court on Friday issued a warrant for Villa’s arrest on for three counts of rape of a child over 14 and three counts of enticing a minor.

The 44-year-old Villa had been working as a football coach at Walpole H.S.

NCAA: Towson hires Ambrose

Rob Ambrose was hired as the football coach at Towson, signing a five-year contract with his alma mater after serving for seven seasons as an assistant at UConn.

* Florida coach Urban Meyer picked offensive line coach Steve Addazio to succeed Dan Mullen, who was hired as Mississippi State’s head coach earlier this month, as offensive coordinator.

NBA: Szczerbiak to miss week

Cavaliers forward Wally Szczerbiak will miss at least one week with a bruised right knee. The team said in a statement that Szczerbiak suffered right knee contusions during the last several games.

* Wizards forward Caron Butler missed yesterday’s game against Oklahoma City with a left ankle injury.

* Ben Gordon made three 3-pointers in the first quarter last night against the Hawks to pass Scottie Pippen and become the Bulls’ career leader in 3-pointers.

MLB: Reds sign Taveras

Willy Taveras and the Reds have agreed to a two-year contract, filling the team’s need for a center fielder and leadoff hitter.

MMA: Mir wins, Lesnar next

Former champion Frank Mir stopped Antonio Nogueira at 1:54 of the second round last night in UFC 92, earning a title shot against newly crowned heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

In the co-main event, former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson knocked out Wanderlei Silva in the first round.

Silva had knocked out Jackson in both the two previous meetings. Jackson got his revenge, rocking Silva with a left hook and at 3:21 of the first.

TRACK: Record at The Armory

Senior Charlene Lipsey of Hempstead set a meet record and ran the fastest time in the U.S. this season winning the 800 meters in 2:09.47 at the 10th annual Marine Corps Holiday Classic at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory.
