TEXTBOOK CASE OF ‘$TEALING’

A brazen Department of Education purchasing agent used his DOE debit card to make more than $55,000 worth of personal purchases, investigators said yesterday.

Among the more unusual toys Cecil Darrell allegedly bought with taxpayer money were two handheld metal detectors favored by oddball beach trollers – at a price tag of more than $1,300.

He also bought Bose audio equipment and iPod speakers as well as camcorders, digital cameras and a total of 27 notebook computers between 2004 and 2007, according to special schools prober Richard Condon.

Darrell, 56, could not be reached for comment. He was fired nearly two years ago, officials said. The case has been referred to the Manhattan DA.
