Cut, then run, gov urges pols on budget

ALBANY — Frustrated after weekend negotiations failed — again — Gov. Paterson last night sent a written appeal to all 212 members of the Legislature, urging them again to take action on the state’s looming $3.2 billion deficit.

“The warnings are clear, and those who choose to ignore them do so at their own peril,” Paterson wrote.

“I look forward to your cooperation as we make the difficult choices that are necessary to put New York’s fiscal house in order.”

Paterson’s appeal before the holiday recess comes two weeks after he made a personal plea to cut state spending, in a rare address to a joint session of the Legislature.

The Legislature is due to reconvene today for a third week of special sessions.
