PSAL football roundup: Ellam, Wagner win in shootout

Trevor Ellam ran for 151 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns and quarterback Jordan Rodriguez rushed for 89 yards on 11 carries and two scores to lead the Susan Wagner football team to a 36-32 win against William Grady on Saturday in Week 2 PSAL City Championship division action.

Rodriguez found pay dirt twice in the fourth quarter – on runs of 9 yards and 17 yards – to put things out of reach for Grady (0-2). Michael Ellam had a big, 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter. Wagner (2-0) rushed for 255 total yards.

Grady wasn’t bad on the ground, either, rushing for 232 yards. Rahim Salahuddin went for 156 yards on 31 carries and three touchdowns and quarterback Kenny Leveille rushed for 68 yards on 13 carries. Leveille was 9-of-15 for 87 yards passing with a touchdown to Kevon Primus in the fourth quarter.

Lehman 14, New Utrecht 8: Edwin Guity was 5-of-9 passing for 72 yards and two touchdowns, including a 38-yard strike to Eric Matos, to help lead Lehman (1-1) in Brooklyn. Guity’s touchdown pass to Raynaude Byass with six minutes left put the Lions ahead for good.

On defense, Byass had seven tackles and an interception, Michael Smith had seven tackles and Yannick Kabore had two sacks. Punter Jose Bonilla, a major factor in the game, had five punts for 154 yards.

Davon Collins had 174 yards on 16 carries and an 80-yard touchdown run for New Utrecht (0-2). Eric Pichardo had eight tackles and Matt Corona had eight tackles.

Boys & Girls 18, John F. Kennedy 14: Wilbert Lee had 192 all-purpose yards, including a 71-yard touchdown reception from Kamron Palmer, to lead Boys & Girls (1-1). Diamond Upshur ran for 71 yards on seven carries and Khadeem Campbell ran for a touchdown.

On defense, Lee had eight tackles, a sack and an interception, David Nooks had 15 tackles, Upshur had 13 tackles and Olusegun Ibukun added 11 tackles.

Flushing 30, James Madison 12: Jordan Beranger ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another score to lead Flushing (2-0) in Brooklyn. Shittu Salami caught Beranger’s touchdown pass, a 7-yard strike, and Andrew King ran in another for the Red Devils, who are in just their first season as a Level 5 squad. Madison is 0-2.

Midwood 29, Grand Street Campus 6: Darrel Walker rushed for 144 yards on seven carries with a touchdown and Donovan Edwards ran for 86 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown for Midwood (1-1) at home. Dominic Clarke and Donovan Bleus also had rushing scores. The Hornets had 389 yards on the ground. Grand Street is 1-1.

Brooklyn Tech 14, Bayside 8: Tarrance Taylor had 80 yards on nine carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run, and James Brown had two catches for 51 yards to lead Brooklyn Tech (2-0) in Queens. Brown and Oyeleye Odewunmi both had interceptions and Mike Plonski had five tackles and two sacks for the Engineers.

New Dorp 20, Columbus 0: Elijah Bratcher caught three balls for 130 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Matt Popovic was 6-of-10 for 163 yards with a touchdown and an interception to lead New Dorp (2-0). Popovic also had two scores and 54 yards on the ground. Columbus is 0-2.

BOWL DIVISION

John Adams 25, South Shore 0: Daniel Perez was 6-of-10 for 94 yards and three touchdowns and Chris McLaren rushed for 74 yards on five carries and a touchdown for Adams (2-0) at home. Akeeme Chavis caught all three of Perez’s touchdown passes.

On defense, Dominic Brown had three sacks, Michael Haynie had two and Victor Rosario one for the Spartans. South Shore is 0-2.

August Martin 27, FDR 12: Thomas Greyer was 2-of-4 passing for 135 yards and two touchdowns and Shane Chambers caught three balls for 192 yards and two touchdowns to lead Martin (2-0) at home. Kelechi Ezeigwe rushed for the Falcons’ other touchdown.

On defense, Matthew Lyttle had 13 tackles, a sack and an interception. Adonai Smith Bey recovered a fumble he returned for a touchdown for August Martin. FDR is 1-1.

Thomas Jefferson 24, Jamaica 0: Ricky Joseph was 11-of-14 passing for 262 yards with three touchdowns and an interception and Mark Thomas caught five balls for 151 yards and two touchdowns to lead Jefferson (2-0) in Queens. Kadeem Bailey rushed for 61 on six carries with a touchdown and Shawn Thompson caught three balls for 57 yards and a touchdown for the Orange Wave. Jamaica is 0-1.

CUP DIVISION


Automotive 50, Far Rockaway 0: Barry Montgomery rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns and also returned an interception for a touchdown to lead Automotive (2-0). Zorey Lewis had four catches for 107 yards and a touchdown, James Clark had 77 yards on six carries and a touchdown and Mo Edwards was 8-of-13 passing for 161 yards and a score.

Automotive has now scored a combined 122 points in its first two games to its opponents’ zero. Far Rockaway is 1-1.

Info Tech 12, Stuyvesant 6: Chris Change rushed for 111 yards on 17 carries and Shawn Chowdhury had 69 yards on eight rushes for Info Tech (2-0). Quarterback Chris Bohan added a rushing touchdown. Change had five tackles and a sack and Cody Walthall had three tackles and a fumble recovery. Stuyvesant is 1-1.

Petrides 30, Evander Childs 19: The Panthers (2-0) scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to escape with a home win. Andre Higgins ran for 64 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown and Billy Caban ran for 62 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns to lead Petrides. Joe Volpe also had a touchdown on the ground.

Davian Gauntlett ran for 121 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns and quarterback Anthony Minaya was 7-of-13 passing for 106 yards and two interceptions for Evander (0-2).

South Bronx 40, McKee/Staten Island 20: Michael Walker was 5-of-8 for 106 yards and three touchdowns and Luis Sanchez caught three balls for 63 yards and two touchdowns to lead South Bronx (2-0). Michael Drake rushed for 127 yards on 11 attempts with a touchdown and Jason Challenger also had a score for the Phoenix.

Ray Woolford caught two touchdown passes from Gary Levin and ran for another score for MSIT (1-1).
