Discovery introduces first pay-TV channel in China

Discovery Communications is launching its first pay-TV channel in China.

A deal with China’s Wasu Digital TV Media Group will introduce Chinese viewers to such American fare as “Amish Mafia,” “Mooshiners” and “Man Versus Wild.”

Discovery will supply programming to new pay-TV channel Qui Suo, which launched this month and means “quest for knowledge.” The channel is part of a new pay-TV package with 30 million subscribers.

The partnership expands Discovery’s reach in the country, where its programming is already carried by several state-run broadcasters, including CCTV and Shanghai Media Group.

Foreign broadcasters are not allowed to own TV channels, so the deal is structured to pay Discovery a consulting fee.
