Bollywood to order, well-done with cheese

If you’re not a fan of Bollywood movies — which have long resisted crossover attempts in this country despite the success of hybrids such as “Slumdog Millionaire” — Mani Ratnam’s action melodrama “Raavan” probably isn’t going to make a convert out of you.

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, India’s top acting couple, star respectively as a tribal leader and the newlywed he kidnaps as part of a plot to subvert her husband (the singly named Vikram), who’s just been appointed police commander of the town.

Not unusually for a Bollywood movie, “Raavan” combines beautiful photography, over-the-top acting, cheesy special effects and musical numbers that stretch things out well beyond the two-hour mark.
