Giants’ Fewell isn’t Titans’ pick

Perry Fewell went 0-for-4.

The Giants defensive coordinator has been passed over for the Titans head coaching job in favor of Tennessee assistant Mike Munchak.

Fewell interviewed for the job Friday, his fourth chance this offseason for a top NFL post. He previously met with the Broncos, Browns and Panthers.

Fewell, who finished his first season with the Giants, was among candidates that included Titans assistant Mike Heimerdinger and Falcons assistant Mike Mularkey.

The NFL’s Rooney Rule requires a team to interview at least one minority candidate for a vacant head coaching job.

Last week, Fewell said he was grateful for the experience of multiple interviews.

“I’ve learned from each and every interview I’ve been on,” Fewell told The Tennessean on Friday. “Each and every one is a little bit different. So I don’t get tired of the calls. It’s exciting to get the opportunity. There are only 32 of these jobs, so it’s a real honor and I’m humbled to be called by one of those teams.”

Titans owner Bud Adams announced Munchak’s hiring Monday. Adams called the move a special day for the franchise; the former offensive lineman is its first ex-player to coach the team (formerly the Houston Oilers).

“Mike has been successful at everything he has been associated with at our franchise and I have no reason to believe that he won’t be successful as our head coach,” Adams said in a statement. “He earned Hall of Fame distinction as a player and yearly he has been one of the best offensive line coaches in the NFL. He understands where we have been and knows where we need to go.”

Munchak, a favorite of Adams, was the first man interviewed to replace Jeff Fisher and had been considered the top candidate.
