Violent Chinatown bus war

A vicious Chinatown bus feud has landed one man in a hospital and two others in jail on federal charges of having a driver beaten with baseball bats, according to authorities.

Bus-company owner Jiang Yan Hua and alleged henchman Chen Kuo were charged in Brooklyn last week with interfering with interstate commerce by strong-arming rivals.

“Are you afraid of dying?” Hua asked a van driver before promising to “break his legs” if the man did not get out of the business, the criminal complaint states.

Hua’s alleged tactics for taking over the shuttling of Chinese restaurant workers between the city and Poughkeepsie began subtly, the court papers say. He printed up cards nearly identical to the company’s in an attempt to fool riders into using his service, according to FBI Special Agent Philip Wu.

When that didn’t work, Hua’s musclemen confiscated cellphones from restaurant workers using the competing bus company and refused to return them until they had switched to Hua’s shuttle, Wu charges.

He adds that:

* In February 2010, Hua parked his vans in front of his rival’s to prevent them from loading passengers.

* In that same month, Hua vowed to hurt several drivers if they didn’t drop out of the business, and Kuo threatened to kill the drivers’ families.

* And in June, three men swinging bats attacked a driver as he parked near a Brooklyn gas station.
