School of sharks at Rockaway

Fear the fins.

Bathers at Rockaway Beach in Queens made a dash toward the sand yesterday after a group of sharks and rays were spotted hovering close to the shoreline.

“I was so far out and I heard the lifeguards blowing their whistles. They started yelling, ‘Shark! Shark! Shark!’ ” recalled Nicholas Sealey, 15, of Richmond Hill.

It was about 12:30 p.m. when lifeguards at Beach 86th Street told The Post they spied 11 sharks — averaging about 3 feet in length, according to witnesses — and a school of stingrays bobbing around in the Atlantic.

Lifeguards told swimmers to clear out of the water while curious beachgoers stood atop nearby rock jetties, peering through binoculars as the aquatic wildlife made its way along the coast.

“My kids had their feet in the water, splashing, and suddenly the lifeguard made the sign of a fin on her head,” said Lisa Bogdanovic of Middle Village, who was visiting with her children, ages 10, 8 and 4.

NYPD officials and Parks Department spokeswoman Cristina Deluca insisted only stingrays were in the water.

No one was injured.
