Possible to find ‘cheap’ seats on this Subway train

There’s something to be said for last-minute shopping.

The average price for a single ticket to this weekend’s Subway Series at Yankee Stadium purchased through a secondary market is the lowest it has been in the past two years, according to data obtained through Post Tickets and TixIQ.

Using prices listed on StubHub, TicketNetwork, TicketsNow and eBay, the average price to see the Yankees and Mets at the Stadium this weekend is $112.22, down nearly 40 percent from last season’s Stadium cost of $186.04.

For the Subway Series in July at Citi Field, fans wanting to buy tickets now can expect to shell out $179.33 on the average for a ticket, down nearly 14 percent from last year’s average secondary market price of $207.64.

Why the drop in prices? The economy for starters. Plus, the Mets, for example, sliced prices 14 percent across the board. And this weekend’s series prices were down for other reasons.

“Fans tend to sell their tickets to early-season games more readily than those games later in the season,” Chris Matcovich of TixIQ said. “The Yankees have a lot more season-ticket holders, so there are more tickets available on the secondary markets.”

Economics 101. Supply and demand and all that. Plus, don’t overlook one other major factor.

“The weather has been poor,” Matcovich said.

That tends to put a damper on the family outing of packing the kids in the minivan to go sit and get soaked for a couple hours.

Matcovich stressed that the averages came through a study of each individual game in the three-game series, then averaging out those three figures. Prices for last year’s game were based on available tickets on the secondary markets roughly 12 hours before each first pitch.

For this weekend, Post Tickets and TixIQ examined asking prices for 14,469 tickets, up more than 1,000 from last year’s Stadium total. Already, 18,400 tickets have been listed for the July Citi Field series, compared to just 4,777 last year.
