Dead dolphin in Hudson near NYC’s Chelsea Piers

NEW YORK — A dead dolphin has been found in the Hudson River near Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers sports complex.

The animal was found floating near Pier 59 early Thursday.

Kimberly Durham of the Riverhead Foundation said a team from the foundation is bringing the dolphin’s carcass to the foundation’s facilities on Long Island.

She said a necropsy will be conducted to determine what the dolphin died of.

Durham said the dead animal was an adult common dolphin.

She said the species generally travels offshore in large groups, so a common dolphin swimming alone close to shore is likely sick or injured.
