Yankees will go to battle with youngster Warren

Indianapolis Indians manager Dean Treanor had seen his team beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in the first two games of last weekend’s series heading into Sunday’s game against Adam Warren. In fact, SWB had lost six straight games going into that day.

“[Warren] came out with a lot of intensity,” Treanor told The Post Wednesday. “Just the way he went about it. I was very impressed with that. He attacked us.”

Treanor said he was most impressed by the fact the 24-year-old righty was totally focused on ending SWB’s losing streak. Warren proceeded to shut out the Indians on five hits over five innings en route to a 4-0 win.

Friday, Warren is set to make his major league debut when the Yankees face the White Sox and taking CC Sabathia’s slot in the rotation. The Yankees will be going with the young-and-old as they fill the spots of the injured Sabathia (strained groin) and Andy Pettitte (fractured fibula). The 35-year-old Freddy Garcia will start for Pettitte on Monday.

Garcia began the year in the rotation, but after four miserable starts (12.51 ERA), he went to the bullpen. The veteran righty has posted a 1.56 ERA in 10 relief outings, including a scoreless 2 ¹/₃-inning stint Wednesday.

“I was more surprised by how the season started for him than how he’s pitching lately,” general manager Brian Cashman said.

Asked if he solved what was plaguing him at the start of the year, Garcia said, “They gave me a lot of time to think about it.”

Warren is 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 starts for SWB, though he has just 59 strikeouts in 86 ¹/₃ innings and an ugly 1.46 WHIP. He gets the call ahead of David Phelps, who has excelled in the bullpen for the Yankees.

“Phelps is the guy if stretched out, [then he] would have been a prime candidate,” Cashman said. “Warren is by far the next best for us.”

Treanor said Warren hit 93 mph on Sunday and consistently was throwing 92 mph. He also praised his cutter.

“He’s got good enough stuff,” Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild told The Post. “We saw him in the spring. As long as he goes after people he’s got a chance.”
