Construction to cause major delays on GW Bridge starting Saturday

A three-month construction project is expected to create major backups for New Jersey drivers crossing the George Washington Bridge.

The project on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge on the New York side starts on Saturday. The Alexander Hamilton is the main thoroughfare for eastbound drivers crossing the GWB and getting to I-95 in the Bronx.

Traffic could back up for miles into New Jersey.

The project will not affect motorists using the GWB from New York to New Jersey.

New Jersey drivers are advised to use the three Staten Island crossing. Motorists from the north are advised to use the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Signs about the construction project were posted near the bridge in New Jersey.

The work on the Alexander Hamilton involves steel reinforcement and deck replacement.
