Mets on deck at Nationals

INSIDE THE MATCHUPS

METS: After holding the Phillies to one run on three hits over eight innings on July 3, Niese didn’t fare so well against the Cubs in his last start on July 8. He allowed seven runs on nine hits over seven innings, while striking out only three, in the 7-0 loss. He has not faced the Nationals this season, but is 2-0 with a 3.42 ERA in four career starts against them.

NATIONALS: Detwiler, who has been moved in and out of Washington’s rotation all season, has not collected a win since June 5. Over his last three starts, he has allowed seven runs on 20 hits over 16 2⁄3 innings and a 3.78 ERA. He has beaten the Mets twice this season and is 3-1 with a 3.60 ERA in seven career appearances (four starts) against them.

STAT SO?

METS: The Mets’ current four-game losing streak is tied for their longest of the season, having happened twice before this year (April 30-May 3; June 23-26).

NATIONALS: Ian Desmond leads the Nationals with 17 home runs and, with his next one, will establish a franchise record for most by a shortstop.
