Finally, GSA signs WTC lease

It’s official — 1 World Trade Center is now more than half-full.

The General Services Administration finally signed a long-awaited lease yesterday, capping a five-year saga to bring the US agency to the iconic skyscraper, due to open in early 2014.

“The fat lady sang,” an exultant Sen. Chuck Schumer told The Post. Schumer had pushed the GSA to complete the deal for about 270,000 square feet — which pushes the 3 million-square-foot tower to just over 50 percent leased.

The Port Authority and the Durst Organization, 1 WTC’s owners, wanted the deal done by July 4. The GSA had come to basic terms with them on the 20-year lease last summer, but the embattled agency sat on it until Schumer got involved last spring.

“I told GSA to get it done by July 4th,” Schumer said yesterday. “They finally did it.”
