Port Authority AHEAD of schedule with Bayonne Bridge upgrade

Weird but true — the Port Authority is actually six months ahead of schedule on a crucial portion of its $1 billion Bayonne Bridge upgrade, officials said today.

The bridge’s roadway will be elevated 64 feet by the fall of 2015, a major project that will allow larger vessels to access port terminals.

The original completion date was mid-2016.

Port Authority Chairman David Samson said it’s crucial for the agency to accommodate larger ships in time for the opening of the widened Panama Canal.

The canal is expected to open around the same time the bridge is raised.

“Competition is fierce among all the ports on the East Coast.” Samson said.
