Jersey boy dies after sand tunnel collapses on him

A 12-year-old boy died after a sand tunnel he was digging into on a beach in Long Branch, NJ, collapsed on top of him, officials said.

Ezra Cornman died Wednesday afternoon from injuries sustained from the collapse, according to Jason Roebuck, Capt. of the Long Branch police.

Cornman was building the tunnel with his younger brother when it came crashing down around 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to witnesses.

The victim’s mother, who was nearby when the collapse occurred, called 911 and reported her son was covered in sand.

The unconscious child was soon dug out by emergency responders who then performed CPR on him.

One beachgoer from Staten Island said the boy wasn’t moving.

“They were pumping him, pressing on his stomach, trying to bring him back,” she said. “They kept trying to revive him, pressing, pressing. There was blood coming out of his nose…He didn’t move.”

The tunnel was deep, authorities said, and the weight of all the sand on the boy’s chest made it impossible for him to breathe.
