10-year-old qualifies for women’s U.S. Amateur

Better watch out, Michelle Wie. Here comes Lantanna Stone.

A 10-year-old golfer from Valrico, Fla., Stone will be shooting for the U.S. Women’s Amateur championship next month in Ohio after winning medalist honors by shooting a 2-under 70 at a recent qualifier in Wellington, Fla.

Stone, who stands 4-feet, 8 inches tall and weighs less than 100 pounds, is the youngest qualifier for the Women’s Amateur, according to Golfweek.

Wie, now 22, was just a bit younger when, at age 10, she qualified for the 2000 Women’s Amateur Public Links. Allisen Corpuz, who qualified for the 2008 WAPL at 10 years and 3 months old, is the youngest qualifier for a USGA event.

Stone, according to the Florida State Golf Association, has won more than 100 tournaments and is coached by Charlotta Sorenstam, the sister of LPGA Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam.

Stone said her goal is to be someday ranked as the No. 1 women’s golfer.

“God gave me the greatest talent in the world, but I don’t want to throw it away,” Stone told a reporter in an interview for Scholastic Kids magazine. “I want to beat the older girls. You have to practice every day. You know what they say, practice makes perfect.”

Stone runs her own Twitter account and has a personal website.

“Thanks everyone for the well wishes i received for qualifying for the U.S. Women Amateur,” she tweeted. “So happy and excited to play!”

The Women’s Amateur begins Aug. 6 at The Country Club in Cleveland.
