Environmental report due for bridge in NY suburbs

WHITE PLAINS, NY — The sped-up process toward a big new bridge in the New York suburbs is reaching a milestone.

The state is expected to issue its final report Wednesday on the environmental impact of the new Tappan Zee Bridge. It will replace the aging, overused span that now crosses the Hudson River between Tarrytown and Nyack.

A preliminary report released in January found the bridge would have no major lasting environmental effects.

Since then the state has received thousands of comments. The final impact statement is to take those comments into consideration.

Most of the criticism of the new bridge has focused on the lack of mass transit. Plans to include commuter trains or bus rapid transit have been put off to keep the cost to an estimated $5.4 billion.
