Shirt storm surprising to Jets’ Tebow

CORTLAND — Jets quarterback Tim Tebow was shocked at the stir he caused with his shirtless run through the rain Saturday.

“I truly didn’t think it was going to be such a big deal,” he told The Post.

Tebow ran off the practice field in a driving rainstorm Saturday and the moment was captured by photographers and was all over the Internet minutes later. The backup quarterback/special teams player poked fun at himself at the quarterbacks meeting on Saturday night.

“When we walked into the quarterbacks meeting room, we told Tim, ‘We’re just glad you kept your shirt on for the meeting,’ ” third-string quarterback Greg McElroy told reporters.

“Sure enough, there it came off and he sat shirtless for about 30 minutes.”

His fellow quarterbacks were not the only ones to give Tebow a hard time.

“Oh yeah … the slow motion run,” linebacker Bart Scott said. “Like I told him, I’ve never seen anybody decide to take their shirt off in the rain. Usually I put stuff on.

“But then maybe it was holy water, I don’t know.”

* It was a rough day for both Tebow and Mark Sanchez in team drills. Each quarterback went 1-for-7 on the day. The practice was run-heavy and coach Rex Ryan joked after hearing his quarterbacks’ statistics: “I hope we can run the ball.”

* Linebacker Aaron Maybin has been impressive over the first few days of camp. His constant hustle has caught the eye of the coaching staff. “[Defensive coordinator Mike] Pettine showed Aaron running to the football like he does and he said, ‘Guys, as a teammate you ought to be embarrassed because this guy embarrassed the other 10 guys that were out there at that time,’ ” Ryan said. “That’s the way Aaron plays. It’s 100 miles an hour.”

Yesterday’s practice marked the first time the Jets have been in full pads since last year.

* The hitting started quickly and the first casualty was TE/FB Josh Baker, who broke his nose. … OT Jeff Otah (knee) has until tomorrow to pass his physical or last week’s trade with the Panthers will be nullified. Otah still sounds unsure if he can pass it. “I feel better. … I don’t really know exactly what the physical is, but I’m just trying to get healthy so I can play some football.”
