Good Samaritan stabber sentenced to 18 years in prison

A Queens man who admitted to stabbing a Good Samaritan to death was sentenced to 18 years in prison today.

Daryl Reid, 24, confessed to Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter in June that he and his co-defendants, Terril Pinnock and Jahvaughn Garrison, beat up 49-year-old Richard Salter for coming to the aide of a transgender woman who they were harassing.

“[Salter’s] heroism should be recognized…he stood up against bigotry,” said Justice Buchter before he imposed the lengthy sentence for Reid.

Reid stabbed Salter in the leg, which hit a main artery and caused him to bleed to death inside the Far Rockaway deli on July 4, 2010.

“This crime is brutal, gratuitous and brought on by intolerance,” said the judge who slammed Reid for claiming self-defense in his probation report after he pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter.

The mother of Salter’s teenage children, Jessica Hamilton, was in the courtroom along with his uncle for the sentencing. They, however, were too shaken up to give impact statements, but requested that Reid receive the maximum.

“This has been very hard, especially for my oldest son. Richard was a good guy and he died doing the right thing. It was very unfortunate,” said Hamilton outside of court.

Pinnock, 22 and Garrison, 23 also pleaded guilty to gang assault and will serve 6 1/2 year in prison, but will remain out on bail until their sentencing on Oct. 1.
