Spongebob the 33 pound cat dies

One of the city’s fattest cats has died — of a broken heart.

Spongebob, the 33 pound tabby that titillated New Yorkers earlier this summer, has gone to the great kitty litter in the sky after suffering from an inoperable heart growth.

Vets said the cat, adopted just two months ago from an animal shelter, could not be operated on because he was too fat and would have been killed by the high dose of anesthesia needed to knock him out.

Doctors discovered the growth just two weeks ago while they were treating the cat’s asthma.

The tubby tabby — who looked the cat that ate the 1,000 canaries — was dropped off at a shelter in SoHo last April but had trouble finding a new home because of his girth.

He was left homeless after his owner had to go into a hospice.

Bob apparently got into his hefty condition by being allowed to eat freely all day.

Shelter workers put him on a strict diet and exercise program and Bob had dropped down to 30 lbs when he adopted by a Manhattan couple — Courtney and Matt Farrell — in June.
