Jets WR Santonio will take return from injury slow

CORTLAND — Don’t count on seeing Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes on the field anytime soon.

Holmes, who injured his ribs in Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage, said he will be careful about returning too soon. He has not practiced since the injury.

“This is football,” Holmes said. “Things like this happen all the time. You’ve just got to be cautious of what can happen if you continue to play with this type of injury. It can’t prolong itself through the season, so you want to be as cautious as possible and get as much treatment as you can and continue to work out and do only the little things to strengthen the muscles that are around it. I think that will be the best bet for me just to take it one day at a time.”

Holmes said he suffered broken ribs in 2008 with the Steelers and this was related to that injury. He said he had some damage to the cartilage around the ribs and they may have “separated.” Holmes has not been ruled out of Friday’s game with the Bengals, but it seems highly unlikely he will play. He said he can’t move laterally.

“I’m getting better today,” Holmes said. “I spent a little time with Bill Hughan, our strength coach, just getting some functional movements together and stretching, trying to stay active as much as possible so once it’s time to get rolling I’ll be ready to roll with no setbacks.”

* Cornerback Darrelle Revis was in and out of practice yesterday with some back stiffness. Trainers stretched Revis out on the sideline and he left practice to go to the locker room at one point. But he was able to do most drills.

Coach Rex Ryan said they are just being cautious.

“We don’t want him to have the setbacks that he’s had in a couple of other preseasons where he’s actually pulled a hamstring,” Ryan said. “We don’t need for Darrelle to be set back two or three weeks when we can get him to fight through some things and that’s what we did.”

Revis actually had to sit out the sprints Ryan had the team do as punishment for fighting yesterday. Ryan said Revis and linebacker Bart Scott could not finish, but they made the sprints up at the end of practice.

* C Nick Mangold did not practice, but returned from London yesterday after watching his sister, Holley, compete in the Olympics. … Besides Holmes, RT Wayne Hunter (back) and WR Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) did not practice. RB Joe McKnight (groin) left practice. OT Dennis Landolt subluxed his knee, Ryan said, and could be out for some time. … The team waived WR Chris Forcier.
