Justin says he will Tuck in at tackle for Giants if needed

The interior of the Giants defensive line is not as thin at it may seem.

With the team dealing with numerous injuries to its defensive tackles, defensive end Justin Tuck said he wasn’t sure if he would spend more time playing on the inside, but that he wouldn’t have a problem doing so.

“We’ll see. Obviously, I did both and I’ve had success doing both,” Tuck said Wednesday in Manhattan at an event where he helped try to set a Guinness World Record for most sandwiches created at once. “Wherever the team needs me to help us being successful, that’s what I’m willing to do.”

Though Tuck is used on the outside in the base defense, the 29-year-old has been used on the interior in different packages over his first six seasons because of his versatility and the team’s depth at defensive end. Currently, the Giants are without defensive tackles Chris Canty (knee, on the physically unable to perform list), Shaun Rogers (blood clot in leg, out for season), Marvin Austin (back, unknown severity) and Martin Parker (herniated disc, out for season).

“Injuries happen and hopefully we can avoid them,” Tuck said. “For the guys that are kind of banged up right now, hopefully we can get some of those guys back healthy.”

Either way, the Giants increased their depth at the position by signing two defensive tackles, Oren Wilson and Carlton Powell. Wilson was signed Wednesday and takes the place of Parker, who was waived/injured and will have surgery, while Powell was brought in on Tuesday when Rogers’ ailment was revealed.

Both Wilson and Powell are expected to be in uniform for Saturday night’s preseason game against the Jets.

Wilson is 6-foot-1, 305 pounds and was not drafted out of Akron. He started his college career at Michigan State and made 26 starts for the Spartans from 2007 to 2009. He also was sentenced to 21 days in jail for his involvement in an assault at a fraternity party. Wilson played in three bowl games for Michigan State, sat out the 2010 season when he transferred and played in all 12 games last season for Akron, a school that also brought to the Giants Chase Blackburn and Domenik Hixon.

Powell, who is 6-3 and 310 pounds, is entering his fifth NFL season and joining his fifth NFL team, though he has played sparingly. He was originally a fifth-round draft pick by the Broncos out of Virginia Tech. Powell played 38 snaps in the Falcons’ first four games last season.

Even after signing two defensive tackles, the Giants aren’t done shopping just yet, as today they will take a look at Marcus Thomas, 26, who spent the past five seasons with the Broncos. Thomas has played in 76 games, with 34 starts, and would provide experience for the defensive line.
