Tebow high on former Florida teammate Demps joining Jets

CORTLAND — Jets quarterback Tim Tebow knows all about Jeff Demps. The two played together at Florida in 2008 and 2009.

With the Jets expressing interest in the Olympic sprinter and NFL running back hopeful, the team asked Tebow about his college teammate.

“Jeff is a great guy and a great player and he is someone that I was proud to play with in college,” Tebow said. “He did a great job for us, in college. I feel like wherever he goes, he’ll work hard and do a good job for that team.”

Tebow said he would tell Demps what it’s like to play for the Jets if the two speak.

“I talk to him as a friend,” Tebow said, “but the Jets [are] a great organization and a great place. Would we love to have him? Absolutely. I would as a teammate just because I know how hard he works and what he could bring to the table.”

Tebow also addressed his photo from college that ran in GQ magazine this week. Tebow is shirtless with his arms outstretched in the photo, leading some to speculate he was posing like Jesus Christ on the cross.

“Was I trying to do anything as far as the crucifix? Absolutely not,” Tebow said. “I mean, I don’t know — it was six years ago, I don’t even remember what I was doing, but I wasn’t trying to do anything like that though.”

* The Jets have had a rash of minor injuries during training camp that has prevented anyone, including coach Rex Ryan, from getting a full grasp of what the 2012 Jets look like, particularly on offense.

“I just think we have to get healthy,” Ryan said when asked the biggest question he has about his team. “I think that’s the big thing. It’s frustrating for everyone, its frustrating for the players themselves. We have to get guys healthy. We’re fortunate we haven’t had the major injury. We have had things that they’re going to get better from, but that’s been frustrating. We haven’t had the receivers out there. We have three of our top receivers missing, and that’s not a good thing.Other than that, I feel pretty good about where our team is.”

* Ryan said right tackle Wayne Hunter will play in tomorrow’s game against the Giants. Wide receiver Jordan White (knee) is questionable. Safety Eric Smith (knee), wide receivers Santonio Holmes (ribs/back) and Chaz Schilens (ankle), and nose tackle Sione Po’uha (back) are all out. … Ryan said the starters would play about a half.
