The PSAL website is undergoing an overhaul that will make the league’s (WWW.PSAL.org) more user friendly than its current version. The largest high school sports organization in the country unveiled a beta version of the new site Monday morning at its Long Island City offices. It is expected to go live to the public in a week.

“We wanted to bring the PSAL website into the modern era, make it functional, make it more interactive,” CEO of School Support Services Eric Goldstein said.

The league took in feedback from players, athletic directors and others on how to better the site, which was launched it 2001, and by the public as well as the PSAL coaches and administrators who run the day-to-day operation. The main goal of the redesign is to make information as easily accessible as possible for the site’s users as well as offer a few new features.

“To see that created back then in 2001 and to see where it is now, we are definitely proud of it,” PSAL executive director Donald Douglas said.

Users will notice the change right away as the cluttered home page was eliminated and replaced with a sleek blue banner across the top and an orange drop down menu. Main news can be seen on the left side and a full list of all the day’s games in a scrolling menu on the right.

The schedule can be sorted by borough with a quick click. Team pages have also been revamped, with each club’s schedule, roster, standings and coaches comments all in a tab menu along the bottom. Sports pages also have a scrolling schedule on the right side and boys, girls, junior varsity and varsity versions are easily changed. The site will launch with stats for the last three seasons and could get up to 10 years of back history on it. The stats provided remain the same.

Some of the new features include the ability to watch PSAL-posted video on the site. When clicking on a specific game, a Google map appears showing the location of the contest, and readers are one click away from being given directions. A click on Profiles in the far right corner enables readers to search PSAL.org by team, coach, school, sport and even player, eliminating the string of clicks and page views visitors had to go through in the past.

Before the end of the year, readers will have a chance to get an account and customize their homepages, getting the news and schedules of the teams and schools of their choosing. The site will also be much more compatible with mobile devices, allowing visitors to get information on the go.

“We built [this] with that in mind,” Goldstein said. … “We realized that a lot of people were hitting us through Safari or a Mac product and a lot of it was mobile.”

More accessible as well.
