Rape-furor pol won’t quit

WASHINGTON — The Missouri Republican Senate candidate who said “legitimate” rape victims rarely get pregnant apologized yesterday but refused to quit his pivotal race.

Akin said in an interview over the weekend that “legitimate rape” cases rarely result in pregnancy because “the female body has a way to shut the whole thing down.”

“I don’t know that I’m the only person in public office who has suffered from foot- in-mouth disease here,” Rep. Todd Akin said yesterday.

Akin had been favored to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.).
