Mets’ Torres has no ‘excuses’ for slump

Andres Torres has teammate Ronny Cedeno on his case regularly, but that hasn’t helped him find an offensive groove.

“Ronny tells me to stay with one [approach],” Torres said before the Mets’ 3-1 loss to the Rockies last night. “I try to stay with one thing, but my mind keeps going everywhere.”

But Torres refuses to use attention deficit disorder — with which he was diagnosed in recent years and which he treats with medication — as an excuse.

The center fielder is in a 7-for-33 (.212) rut that included a 19 at-bat hitless drought he ended with a ninth-inning single. For the season, he is batting .230 with two homers and 31 RBIs as part of an underachieving Mets outfield.

“I don’t believe in excuses,” Torres said. “But if I just stayed with one [approach] it would be better. Sometimes I go up there and I start thinking so much stuff, it’s hard to focus.”

Torres will be arbitration eligible this offseason — he’s making $2.7 million this year — and said he would like to remain with the Mets.

But he also said he understands if the organization decides not to tender him a new contract.

“If they say, ‘No,’ I respect that from them,” Torres said. “I’m not going to be like, ‘Oh, why?’ Whatever they want, I respect their decision. I really understand and keep moving forward.”

* The Mets entered last night’s play with a nine-game errorless streak, their second-longest such stretch of the season. It ended when reliever Josh Edgin threw the ball away at first after fielding a bunt by Jonathan Herrera, who later scored what proved to be the winning run on a passed ball by Kelly Shoppach. The team’s fielding percentage of .987 entering yesterday was sixth-best in the major leagues.

* Collin McHugh was named International League Pitcher of the Week, after going 1-0 with a 0.71 ERA in two starts for Triple-A Buffalo. … Catcher Rob Johnson had his minor league assignment to Buffalo voided and was placed on the major league disabled list with a ligament tear in his left thumb. Johnson lost his roster spot last week when the Mets traded for Shoppach.

The right-hander is 7-9 with a 2.88 ERA in 24 appearances this year split between Double-A and Triple-A.
