Red Bulls midfielders Tim Cahill (Australia) and Joel Lindpere (Estonia), left back Roy Miller (Costa Rica) and goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Puerto Rico) have been called up by their respective national teams for games surrounding FIFA dates on Sept. 7 and 11. But none of the players are expected to miss any game time with the Red Bulls.
Players lost to international duty — and injuries — derailed last year’s team. But this team is deeper, and MLS takes breaks now on FIFA dates. All four Red Bulls are expected back in the New York area on Sept. 12, and — after Wednesday night’s game at DC United — don’t play again until hosting Columbus on Sept. 15.
Cahill will play for Australia in a Sept. 6 friendly against Lebanon in Beirut and a World Cup qualifier at Jordan five days later. Lindpere’s Estonia team starts the group stage of World Cup qualifying with a Sept. 7 home game against Romania and Sept. 11 tilt against Turkey in Istanbul.
Miller and Costa Rica face Mexico in home-and-home, third-round World Cup qualifiers Sept. 7 and 11, while Gaudette will play three games for Puerto Rico in Group A of the Caribbean Championships in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.
In other news, the Red Bulls confirmed they have loaned 21-year-old midfielder Victor Palsson to Dutch Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen for nine months. He logged just 463 minutes this year, and needs playing time.
