For only the second time in his career, Mardy Fish erased a two-set deficit and won, turning things around Thursday to beat Nikolay Davydenko 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 at the U.S. Open.
It’s the tournament-record 10th time this year at Flushing Meadows that a man dropped the first two sets before coming back for a victory.
The 23rd-seeded Fish hit 16 aces over nearly 3 1/2 hours to get to the third round by overcoming a wilting Davydenko, who was a U.S. Open semifinalist in 2006 and 2007 but is ranked only 47th now.
The only other time Fish won after trailing by two sets was against Victor Hanescu in the first round of the 2011 Australian Open.
The 30-year-old Fish missed two months this season because of an accelerated heartbeat.
