Domestic violence deaths down 40%

Deaths from domestic violence incidents have plummeted 40 percent citywide this year, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said yesterday.

So far this year, 40 people have been murdered by a lover or spouse — versus 66 this time last year.

The announcement came as Kathleen M. O’Reilly, the commanding officer of the Domestic Violence Unit, was promoted to deputy chief during a ceremony at police headquarters

“Violence in the home is one of the most difficult crimes to combat,” Kelly said.

He said the NYPD has increased the number domestic violence cops.

Kelly also said that in recent years victims have become more open about domestic violence

“There’s always been a reluctance for people to come forward, but we see a willingness to speak more openly about domestic violence,” Kelly said.
