Record 46.7M Americans on food stamps

WASHINGTON — In yet another economic milestone for the Obama administration, food stamps are being used by a record 46.7 million people across the nation.

The aid program has doubled to $75.7 billion over the past four years, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

The number of New York recipients grew by 59,709, to 3,095,534, a 2 percent hike over a year ago. The state ranks fourth in spending at $453.4 million, behind only California, Texas and Florida.

The matter could become another campaign issue. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has called Obama “the best food- stamp president in American history.”

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) defends the program spending.

“We must cut spending and rein in our debt, but I could not disagree more with those in Congress who want to do it on the backs of hungry kids, seniors, veterans and struggling families trying to get back on their feet,” Gillibrand said.
