MLB: Upton hits 3 HRs for Rays

B.J. Upton hit three home runs and James Shields (14-8) pitched a two-hitter in the Rays’ 6-0 win over visiting Texas. Roy Oswalt, making his first start since Aug. 23, left after two innings because of right flexor muscle soreness near his elbow.

Jonny Gomes hit a three-run home run as the Athletics finished off a three-game sweep of the Mariners with a 4-2 victory. The victory moved the A’s within 3 1/2 games of Texas in the AL West.

Zack Greinke (5-2) pitched seven strong innings and Mike Trout hit a leadoff homer for the second straight day as the Angels completed their second straight series sweep with a 3-2 victory over the Tigers.

Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning as the Cubs completed a three-game sweep with a 4-2 win over the Pirates, who have lost seven of nine.

Barry Zito (11-8) pitched the NL West-leading Giants past the Dodgers 4-0 to extend their division lead to 5 1/2 games. Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw was scratched because of an inflamed right hip. The lefty, who was replaced by Joe Blanton, is now scheduled to start tomorrow at Arizona.

GOLF: Creamer, Shin in playoff

Paula Creamer and Jiyai Shin will have to wait until today to break their deadlock in the Kingsmill Championship in Williamsburg, Va. After they each parred the par-4 18th hole eight times in a playoff yesterday, darkness forced the suspension of play for the day.

Peter Hanson of Sweden eagled the final hole to win the KLM Open in Hilversum, Netherlands. Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal (70) and Scotland’s Richie Ramsay (67) shared second place at 12-under.

ETC.: Hamilton wins in Monza

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton won the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Italy, and Formula One leader Fernando Alonso of Ferrari finished third to extend his overall lead.

Arkansas took the second-largest fall out of the AP college football poll, dropping from eighth to unranked after losing Saturday to Louisiana-Monroe. The only team to take a more drastic fall from the poll was Michigan in 2007. The Wolverines opened the season at No. 5 and dropped out after a Week 1 loss to Appalachian State.
