Anderson Cooper opened the new season of “Anderson Cooper Live” by making his first televised remarks about coming out this past summer.

Yesterday’s “ACL” co-host, Kristin Chenoweth, broached the subject, asking Cooper, “I think we both had big summers. Am I wrong?”

Cooper, 45, first revealed that he’s gay in an interview with Andrew Sullivan published last July 2 in The Daily Beast.

“Well, everybody in my life has already, now I’m all blushing and I’m getting nervous, since I was an adult and since I was kid, I mean I came out in high school,” he said on yesterday’s show. “I told my friends, I told my family, I’ve always been out to my coworkers and stuff it’s just not something I talked about publicly, because as a reporter I didn’t think it was appropriate. It didn’t seem like part of my job.”

“What made you at this point say I’d like to [come out]?,” Chenoweth asked him.

“It just got to the point where I’ve been torn for a long time between a desire as a reporter to just do my job and be known as a reporter and at the same time, I do think visibility is important,” Cooper said. “I do think that the tide of history only moves forward when everyone is fully visible. I think it is important just to . . . I didn’t want to send a message that there was anything I was ashamed about or unhappy about or not comfortable with. That was the main thing for me.

“I appreciate all the support I got and all the encouragement. I am the same person I always was, I do the job just the same way.”

Cooper is joined on today’s show by guest co-host Niecy Nash.

Final numbers for his premiere week won’t be available until next week, but it looks like Steve Harvey has gotten off to a good start.

The Steve Harvey Show,” which airs in New York at 3 p.m. (on Ch. 4), clocked in with solid opening numbers last week (the show premiered Tuesday, Sept. 4, after Monday’s Labor Day holiday).

According to “weighted metered market” household averages — as tabulated by Marc
Berman of TV Media Insights (aka “Mr. TV”) — “Harvey” increased its lead-in by 33 percent over those four days, and by a whopping 60 percent over last year’s timeslot average (nationwide).

As things go these days, that’s a strong start for the show.

The season premiere of “Dr. Phil,” by the way, was delayed from yesterday until today (Tuesday) due to rain delays at the US Open (which airs on CBS). In New York, “Phil” will compete with “Steve Harvey” at 3 p.m.

Phil McGraw and Harvey are good friends; I recently interviewed McGraw and he showed me a “good luck” text he sent to Harvey.

Internet TV: The first episode of “Last Resort,” which premieres Sept. 27 on the ABC mothership, is available now through Sept. 17 on Yahoo! TV. The series, about a renegade US sub, stars Andre Braugher and Scott Speedman.

Over on YouTube’s WIGS channel, there’s a new series called “Vanessa & Jan,” which is notable for the acting debut of Langston Fishburne, son of former “CSI” star (and veteran movie actor) Laurence Fishburne. Langston makes his “Vanessa & Jan” debut tomorrow; the series, which revolves around speed-dating, stars Laura Spencer, Caitlin Gerard, Walton Goggins and James Wolk.

Fishburne’s name on “CSI” by the way?

Langston.

Meanwhile, Martha Stewart and her franchise is now on Hulu and Hulu Plus, for the first time, with three shows: “From Martha’s Kitchen,” “Emeril’s Table” and “DIY Crafts.” All are available via hulu.com. These are shows that previously aired over on the broadcast side and are now making their debuts on the Web.

And Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who’s starring in the upcoming movie “Looper” (with Bruce Willis), can be seen on Rainn Wilson’s YouTube channel, Soul Pancake. In addition to “Looper,” which opens Sept. 28, Gordon-Levitt can be seen in “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Premium Rush,” both of which opened this summer. Busy guy.
