Teen finally escapes Bx. HS’s ‘rubber room’

A Bronx high-school notorious for allegedly trying to transfer struggling students to keep up its stellar graduation rate has eased up on at least one teen in the wake of a Post report detailing his plight.

Bronx Health Science HS senior Lenworth Cuveilje was finally allowed to resume classes yesterday after languishing since last week in a “rubber room” for him and other kids whom the school allegedly wants to push out.

“They did give him his schedule, and he’s in school now,” said the 18-year-old’s mom, Camille Mitchell. “I guess that [Post article] was a wake-up call.”

As with dozens of BHS students in recent years, Lenworth was hounded into transferring out of the Baychester school after he fell behind academically — a practice used to preserve the school’s 95 percent graduation rate, critics told The Post.

But when the teen’s transfer didn’t come through in time for the start of this school year, he showed up at BHS last week only to be told he wasn’t welcome and sent to the rubber room to sit and do nothing along with other unwanted kids, they and their families said.

The school has been under investigation by the city Department of Education for allegedly trying to boot struggling students.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, asked yesterday about the claim that the school’s administrators have been continuing the practice, defended his agency.

“An allegation is just that, and I cannot convict somebody based on an allegation,” he said.
