Childress adds depth to Nets’ roster

The first-ever Brooklyn Nets roster appears to be complete.

The Nets officially signed Josh Childress Thursday to a one-year, non-guaranteed deal, bringing the roster to 15 players.

Though the Nets are expected to sign two or three more players to participate in training camp, Childress and Andray Blatche, whom the Nets signed to a similar deal Wednesday, are both expected to be on the roster when the Nets open the regular season against the Knicks at Barclays Center on Nov. 1.

Childress fills a significant need for the Nets backing up Gerald Wallace at small forward. Initially it appeared the Nets would sign Donte Greene for that role, but Childress entered the picture after Greene injured his ankle in a pickup game in Charlotte last month.

The 6-foot-8 forward was amnestied in July by Phoenix, two years into a five-year, $33.5 million contract he signed with the Suns after spending two years playing for Greek club Olympiacos.

But Childress was far from the same player he was in his first four years in the NBA with Atlanta — playing alongside new Net Joe Johnson and under current Knicks coach Mike Woodson. With Phoenix, Childress averaged 5.0 points and 2.9 rebounds in his first year with the Suns, before averaging 2.9 points in 34 games last season and falling out of their rotation. That led to him being amnestied this summer in order for Phoenix to successfully claim power forward Luis Scola off amnesty waivers.

The Nets hope reuniting Childress with Johnson will help him approach his previous level of performance with Atlanta, where Childress averaged at least 10 points in each of his four seasons before heading overseas as a restricted free agent in 2008 and signing with Olympiacos.
