A hit-and-run driver seriously injured two people in a crash on the Bayonne Bridge this morning, and stole a good Samaritan’s pickup truck to flee the scene, authorities said.
The man was driving towards Staten Island in a burgundy Ford van about 3:50 a.m, when he crossed the center line mid-span and smashed head-on into a Volkswagen Passa, according to Port Authority police spokesman Al Della Fave.
A good Samaritan from Staten Island stopped his black Dodge pickup truck to help — and the van driver jumped into his car, then sped off, authorities said.
The driver of the Passat and his female passenger are being treated at Richmond University Hospital for serious injuries, the spokesman said.
The woman suffered cuts to her head, and the driver had lacerations on his arms.
The truck was later abandoned on Staten Island, but the man that fled has not been caught yet, authorities added.
