Cynthia Rowley

I couldn’t have asked for a better end to fashion week than Cynthia Rowley’s spring installation.

Her show took place in a beautifully tortured rundown building in TriBeCa comprised of circular balconies that, to my amazement, had confetti raining down from them.

This building was extraordinary — all I could think about while at the show was the celebrations that must have happened there in the past. It was the perfect venue to go with the equally beautiful clothes, giving an all around enchanting feel to her presentation.

Upon my arrival, the atmosphere was mellow. About a dozen models were showcased at the front of the room wearing metallics and sequins, matched with trucker hats and gigantic teased hair.

The clothes had a vibrant effervescence to them that did not seem to have an overall theme, but did display the use of many colors. For the most part these pieces were loose fitting in the forms of pants, frocks, and billowy shorts.

One of my favorite details of the show was the bracelets models wore — or what I thought were bracelets — that also posed as flasks. Cynthia has always made clothes and accessories that are incredibly hip and innovative, so this latest creation was no surprise to me.

During the presentation, Cynthia walked around greeting guests and thanking everyone for coming. When I was leaving, I thanked her for having me and congratulated her on the incredible line. I then asked her what her plans were for after the show, and she replied, “Well, now I have to sweep the confetti!”

I laughed because this response encompassed exactly who Cynthia is: incredibly down-to-earth. And that is what her line was, as well. Somehow while still displaying awe-inspiring innovative pieces, her showcase never strayed from portraying her innate laid-back sense of self.
