Landry’s personal fouls hurt Jets

PITTSBURGH — LaRon Landry had an impressive debut for the Jets last week. The encore? Not so much.

Landry drew two foolish personal fouls penalties, both on Steelers scoring drives in the 27-10 Jets loss. Landry, who was signed in March to fortify the safety position, delivered a late hit on Emmaunel Sanders late in the first half that moved the Steelers deep into Jets territory. They ended up scoring a touchdown shortly after that.

In the third quarter, Landry was called for a horse-collar tackle on Antonio Brown just before Ben Roethlisberger found Mike Wallace for a 37-yard touchdown.

“I have to critique myself and try not to put myself in a position like that again,” Landry said. “I’m going to keep on playing the way I play. I just have to be a little smarter and use the right judgment.”

Landry has drawn a lot of praise for his aggressive play, but he plays so recklessly, he could become a personal foul machine. Last week against the Bills, he was called for a late hit.

“We’ll make sure he’s aware of it,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “That’s two times now on the sideline that he’s been called. I love his aggressiveness. You don’t want to slow him down whatsoever, but in those situations it’s better to make sure the guy’s out of bounds without hitting him.”

* Jeremy Kerley had a killer muffed punt in the third quarter that zapped a good chance for the Jets to gain some momentum after stopping the Steelers inside their own 20. Instead, the Steelers recovered his mistake and the Jets lost a chance to gain field position.

“It was selfish on my part,” Kerley said. I should have fair-caught it.”

The Jets are now 1-9 all-time in Pittsburgh and 1-14 in the state of Pennsylvania. …

* RB Shonn Greene left the game in the second quarter with a head injury, but did not have a concussion. He returned in the second half. FB John Conner re-injured the MCL in his right knee, an injury he suffered last week. He will have an MRI exam today. … The Jets used Vlad Ducasse at left guard in place of Matt Slauson for long stretches in the game. Slauson declined to answer questions about it after the game, referring all questions to the coaches. OLB Garrett McIntyre, who started in place of Bryan Thomas (hamstring) had a nice game with two sacks. … The Jets were without CB Darrelle Revis (concussion), TE Dustin Keller (hamstring) and Thomas. The Steelers did not have LB James Harrison (knee) and S Troy Polamalu (calf).
