NYPD officer injured trying to rescue man from Times Sq. tracks

A New York police officer fell onto subway tracks this morning in Times Square trying to rescue a crazed man, authorities said.

Emergency Medical Service Det. James Griffin, 41, spotted the man picking up trash on the tracks of the southbound N train around 7 a.m., police said.

When he was trying to bring the man to safety, the man allegedly resisted and the officer fell, police said. He hit his head on the train tracks and lost consciousness, police said.

The 18-year police veteran was rushed to Bellevue where he regained consciousness and is being treated for a head and arm injury, officials said.

Other officers on the scene were able to subdue the emotionally disturbed man, identified as Richard Wilcox, 29. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, police said.

Train service was suspended for a little over 15 minutes, police said.

Wilcox was charged with reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, criminal trespassing and obstruction of governmental administration.
