Kid stuff 9/23

Today

TAKE A HIKE: You know the old expression about taking a walk in another man’s shoes, right? Try another culture’s footwear on for size at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, where new exhibit “Global Shoes” lets kids explore a “magical shoe store and factory” stocked with shoes from around the world. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., $7.50 per person. 145 Brooklyn Ave., at St. Mark’s Avenue, Crown Heights; 718-735-4400, brooklynkids.org

SHINE A LIGHT: Get ready for next week’s “Morningside Lights” parade (in Morningside Heights, of course) with an all-ages illuminated puppet-making workshop led by the same artists in charge of the annual Village Halloween Parade. This year’s theme is “Imagined City,” so get ready to let yours run wild! Today and tomorrow, noon to 6 p.m., free. Miller Theatre, 2960 Broadway, at 116th Street; 212-854-7799, millertheatre.com

TOMORROW

READING RAINBOW: Kid-lit lovers have their own section at the Brooklyn Book Festival. Look for live readings and appearances by authors including Selina Alko (“B Is for Brooklyn”), Marc Brown of the “Arthur” books and TV series, R.J. Palacio (“Wonder”), Jon Scieszka (“Spaceheadz”) and more. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., free. Brooklyn Borough Hall, Court and Joralemon streets; brooklynbookfestival.org

GARDEN OF EATIN’: Turn your kids on to veggies at the New York Botanical Garden’s “Edible Garden Festival.” You can tour Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens (part of the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden), solve Mario’s Menu Mystery, make a chef’s hat and more. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., $25, $10 for kids under 13. Bronx River Parkway, at Fordham Road; 718-817-8700, nybg.org

STILL TO COME

MAKER BREAK: Build a better mousetrap — or try, at least — at the New York Hall of Science, where the upcoming Rube Goldberg-inspired “World Maker Faire” will showcase such wacky interactive inventions as the Life-Size Mousetrap. Plus, give kids a chance to make their own mad creations. Opens Sept. 29; $27.50 for adults, $12 for kids ages 2 to 17. 47-01 111th St., at 47th Avenue, Flushing; 718-699-0005, nysci.org
