City sergeants honored for heroism

The Sergeants Benevolent Association honored ten members today for heroism in the line of duty.

During a luncheon in Brooklyn, SBA President Edward Mullins awarded plaques to the honorary sergeants from precincts across the city, including the 72nd Squad in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, the 100th Precinct in Rockaway, Queens, and Transit Bureau 2 in Manhattan.

In one case last December, Sgt. George Astras of the 72nd Squad noticed that a computer mugshot of an ex-con recently paroled from prison matched the police sketch of a thug, who posed as a cop and sexually abused a teenage boy during a terrifying three mile drive.

Astras positively identified the perp, who was soon in handcuffs after a pursuit through Sunset Park.

In another case last October, 81st Precinct Sgt. Michael Miller saved his own life by wedging his finger between the hammer and the cylinder of a loaded .38 Caliber revolver pressed against his stomach.

During the ensuing struggle, the gunman repeatedly pulled the trigger in an effort to shoot Miller. But Miller got the better of the suspect and subdued him.

The other honoree sergeants were Edward Allen (ESU 1), Bradley Beamer (100 Pct.), John Patterson (100 Pct.), Stanley Xenakis (100 Pct.), Michael McKenna (ESU 9), Christopher Correa (Tranist District 2, Robert Critelli (Transit Bureau) and Mourad Mourad (67 Pct.)
