Meet the Met

The Post’s report on construction of the Metropolitan Museum outdoor plaza contained inaccuracies and omissions (“Rich Play Met’s Make a Deal,” Sept. 16).

The article wrongly implies that a “secret” agreement was forged to “shrink” the plaza. Every aspect of its permanent design — paving, fountains, lighting, trees — was publicly vetted by a series of board and commission hearings where comments were invited and heard.

The only change: When completed in 2014, there will be fewer tables and chairs and, for the first year, no food or visitor kiosks. The plaza itself will not “shrink.”

As for purported nostalgia surrounding the fountains, please be assured that this issue was also aired: They block entrances, encourage vehicular access on a plaza thronged with pedestrians and are damaged beyond repair.

Thanks to Trustee David Koch’s generosity, the Museum can now construct a magnificent new plaza worthy of its landmark façade and treasures within.
