Tots found roaming SI alone

Two adorable kids were found wandering alone at a busy Staten Island intersection yesterday after fleeing from their baby sitter’s house while she went to the bathroom, authorities said.

The siblings — a 1-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl — were scooped up at the corner of Jersey Street and Brighton Avenue at about 11 a.m. by neighbors and firefighters, who saw the girl carrying a backpack with diapers and a change of clothes for her brother.

“I was waiting for an adult, and then I saw them trying to cross the street almost right in front of a truck,” said veteran firefighter Douglas Dicks, 42.

“She was holding her little brother’s hand,” he said. “I stopped her and asked about her parents. She was a little scared to talk to me, so I got help from a couple of women near the corner.”

The children were taken to the nearby firehouse, where the girl watched cartoons while police tried to find their parents.

“The little boy was crying up a storm,” a witness said. “They were scared to death.”

The 1-year-old eventually fell asleep on a firefighter’s shoulder as he was being toted.

Contacted by the kids’ mother, their stepfather stopped by the firehouse and said they had escaped their sitter’s house when she left them watching TV as she went to the bathroom.

Police said there were no signs of abuse against the children and no charges would be filed.
