President poll-ishes his lead

WASHINGTON — President Obama has opened up a 6-point lead nationally over Mitt Romney in the latest Gallup daily tracking poll — in the wake of Romney playing defense over his leaked remarks about the “47 percent.”

A week before the two candidates face off in their first debate, Obama leads Romney 50-44 percent in the survey, while his job approval/disapproval rating is 51-43 percent.

On Aug. 27, Gallup had Romney leading Obama by 47-46 percent.

A new Bloomberg national poll also puts Obama’s lead at six points, 49-43 percent.

But a Rasmussen Reports poll shows the race remaining tied nationally, at 46-46 percent.

And Rasmussen’s latest Ohio poll puts Obama ahead by just one point, with 47 percent.

A Quinnipiac University poll of three swing states released yesterday gave Obama a wider margin in Ohio, leading Romney by 10 points.

That poll also has Obama up in Florida by 53-44 percent and in Pennsylvania by 54-42 percent.

“The debates may be Romney’s best chance to reverse the trend in his favor,” said Peter Brown, who conducted the Quinnipiac poll.
