At least Apple knows how to get to Sorryville.

That’s where the company landed yesterday when CEO Tim Cook issued a formal apology for its faulty maps app and vowed to fix the fledgling service.

“We strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new maps last week, we fell short on this commitment,” Cook wrote in a letter posted on Apple’s site.

“We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers.”

Apple, trying to ditch all things Google, dropped its rival’s map technology in favor of its own service, which comes bundled with its latest iOS 6 mobile operating software.

But users have widely complained about bad directions, missing destinations and generally incomplete data since the upgrade hit little more than a week ago.

Cook even directed Apple users to rival services while it works out the kinks in the app, which it built from the ground up to include turn-by-turn directions.

“You can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites,” Cook suggested.

Google, soon after the Cook apology, reminded Apple fans that they could still access Google maps through the Web.

It wasn’t the first time Apple has apologized over issues arising from iPhone launches. In 2010, late Apple founder Steve Jobs said sorry to customers over the iPhone 4’s antenna troubles, which sometimes dropped calls.

The company also issued a mea culpa when it had trouble meeting demand for the iPhone 4, and devices were sold out while consumers were still waiting on long lines.
